Remakes: A Cautionary Tale

While writing my post about Kickstarters for old PC games and The Two Guys from Andromeda, I started out with a little vitriol for Michael Bay.

BOOM!

Now while I am not a Bay fanatic at all there have been occasions that I like watching a Bay-stravaganza. I enjoyed 'Bad Boys' as it was fun watching Will Smith and Martin Lawrence pretending to be cops. I also liked 'The Rock' as well. Sean Connery was fun in that movie but for me the real draw of that film was

Stop judging me!

Anyways with the Transformers debacle and the impending 'Ninja Turtles' shart on my childhood I started thinking about what I would and would not like to see remade.....EVER.


This summer we get Total Recall back in theaters. A remake that is closer to the source materials than the original Paul Verhoeven flick from 1990. But is this really needed? Was there some public outcry for a more true to form movie based off of Philip K. Dick's story 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale'? No? Really?? Then why was it remade? Boredom? Money grab? I can't say.  But I will say that while the remake looks like a better film I doubt it will be as entertaining to me.

"I'm a fucking actor!"

It's nothing against Colin Farrell or director Len Wiseman but I just don't think I will be as entertained as I was watching the Arnold spewing one liners, bad prosthetic make up, three breasted mutant woman Johnny Cab destroying version. Even after all this time I still enjoy watching the original Total Recall and still grin like an idiot while viewing it.


Speaking of Colin Farrell I thoroughly enjoyed him as Jerry the Vampire in the 'Fright Night' remake from last year. It was an older cheesy movie that I thought would be a good choice for an update and I really enjoyed it. My blogging compatriot Jugular Josh at "where-there-had-been-darkness" didn't care for it but he's wrong. ** It just was a good example for me of a fun remake of an older property.


I also felt 'The A-Team' was a completely brainless action fest and felt right at home with its source material...a completely brainless action show from the '80's. I would also like to note I would kill for a remake of one of my favorite movies from the '80's and I feel it would be a perfect fit for a relaunch with today's technology.

THIS would be glorious. With how advanced video games have become it is no longer a far fetched idea that they could be training simulators of some kind. Get on this already Hollywood!



However the following are films that I NEVER want to be remade. These are works of art and for my money still hold up as well as they day they released. KEEP OUT HOLLYWOOD!

These are just a few movies that are powerful example of excellence in film. It is a disservice to the film, the cast, crew and all involved if these properties are touched and remade for a new generation. Instead of remaking them I have a suggestion. Why not release them back into theaters again? Get the younger generations interested in seeing them in their original format. While I think it may be too late for some of the current tweens/twenty somethings as they are lost to the fast paced world of not having to think and Googling everything (and believing the first link that shows up without question) we can get the kids coming up after them aware and interested.


And it isn't as difficult as it sounds. Its actually quite easy and I'll give an example. One of my fondest memories as a child was on sunday morning my father and I would watch classic comedies on tv such as The Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, The Marx Bros., etc. I was exposed to those things at an early age. So seeing something that was 'old' wasn't repellent to me but just normal. I grew up appreciating the classics whether it was movies, tv, music or literature. And that's all that you have to do; show the young-uns that this stuff is worth keeping 'as is' and its not always better when its remade. Because when we let that go we end up with

Movie Review: The Grey

Liam Neeson punches wolves a little....battles nature and human instinct like a boss.

This is the most basic and generic statement I can make about a movie that is so much more on every level. Every trailer that was shown gives you a feeling that this is a action movie that pits Neeson and the other survivors of a terrible plane crash in the Alaskan wilderness against a pack of hungry wolves. Its a shame that this is the way the advertisers went as the movie is really an analysis of the human condition. How we as people deal with tragedy,loss,anger,hopelessness and fear. How we battle those demons. That is the heart of The Grey. Not Liam punching wolves to death.

This movie is more akin to the works of Jack London rather than Michael Bay. Its man versus nature in every sense and nature is a cruel mistress. It is uncaring, unforgiving and knows it will be there long after our existence has ended. After seeing this movie I understand why Jack London wrote about areas of Alaska for his works. Its the deadly beauty of this environment that is appealing to the writer and now to the viewers of The Grey. I give the cast and crew kudos for filming this outdoors for the majority of it as it adds to the realism. You get the harshness of a blizzard, ice building up all over, being immobilized in deep snow. You see the perils of traversing through a forest and treacherous mountain range. You also get the serenity of the slow flowing river with its mirror like surface showing a reflection of the snow capped mountains and pine forest. It was just breathtaking how pretty this movie was at times. The movie is also brutal and graphic equally as well.
Speaking of beauty in this movie I have to talk about Neeson's performance. It is Oscar worthy. Really. After watching this I now know why the studio wants to re-release this in the fall of 2012 to remind the Academy just how damn powerful his performance was. He is a man haunted by his past. He ran away to work in Alaska to escape the pain. After the crash he is intense and seems focused on surviving and saving the people who made it. There is a scene where he talks a person through what it is going to be like to die. This person is bleeding out in the wreckage and they can't save him. It was gripping. What he does just with his eyes and tone of voice is astounding. Later in the movie there is a campfire scene where they are confronting a survivor who is acting up to mask his fear and Liam talks him down. His admittance that he too his terrified was also shocking considering all the heroism he has done up to that point. I then thought back on his acting and it was ALWAYS terror and fear. Its how he managed it that made him look strong and unafraid of their situation. Just brilliant. And while I'm gushing about Neeson if it wasn't for the other cast members being just as great this performance couldn't have happened. You feel for these men trapped out in the wilderness being hunted and you mourn for them as they lose their lives in the struggle. Not just against the wolves but against nature itself and their own human mistakes.

I also have to give Joe Carnahan, the director and one of the screen writers, a hearty standing ovation for what he has done with this. I didn't think he had this kind of emotional movie in his bag of tricks. He managed to direct two very excellent action films, Smokin' Aces and The A-Team, but this is beyond the scope of those movies. He should be nominated for a best director Oscar.

This movie really stuck with me after it ended. I was emotionally exhausted after watching it. It was like watching a few people live, and I mean LIVE, their lives for the first time. It was painful to see them lose those same lives in the process. I wasn't alone as my wife was also emotionally invested in this film. There were moments of horror that shook her and moments of outright sadness that made her cry. She loved every second of that too.

So I'm sure you are thinking....do they survive? I won't tell you. I will tell you to see this movie either in the theater or when you can get it on Netflix. Just watch it. It is good. It is a human drama. It was well worth seeing and its one of the few movies I will call a 'film' versus a flick. Films deserve high praise and so does The Grey. Any movie my wife turns to me and says 'We are OWNING this when it comes out on Blu!' also says its worth seeing multiple times to fully soak in the experience. See this!

And make sure you stay through the credits after for the final scene of the movie....

Quick Movie Review: Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengence

This is not a AAA Hollywood block buster. No this is one of the BEST bad B movies you will see this year. It is light years better than the original Ghost Rider movie. It looks better in both special effects and cinematography. Heck the camera work is just crazy and you can thank the directorial team behind the 'Crank' movies for this.


Nic Cage is full on loony in this movie. His insane antics are on par with his acting in 'Bad Lieutenant: Port of Call New Orleans' (which was a excellent movie and no B movie schlock). I really loved how crazy they let this movie become. It felt more like a reboot to the franchise rather than a sequel. I also appreciated how Cage's dialogue had jokes that referred to his other bad films! There was one that referenced 'The Wicker Man' and I damn near fell out of my seat.


If you are on the fence about this it is well worth the rent. If you like Cage and appreciate how he puts in 110% into every performance he does and stays the only believable part of any film he's in...this is a must see on the big screen. Just sit back and let the kinetic lunacy of the master of the Nouveau Shamantic acting style embrace you in pure insane pleasure. So yeah....it was a fun flick. It was also wife approved! God I love her!!!

Also no need for 3D. 2D is just fine.

Quick Movie Review: Chronicle

Chronicle is quite possibly the closest thing you will ever see to a live action version of 'Akira' especially in the movie's final act. I mean this as a complete compliment and other 'professional' movies reviewers seem to agree.

It is also the most enjoyable 'found footage' movie I've ever watched. It is well written, the characters are believable, the story is compelling, the action is exhilarating and frightening at the same time. This movie is also a grand example of how to show the origins of a super villain.....and the birth of a superhero.

I was hoping the movie would be fun to watch but I was not expecting this....quite possibly one of the best movies I'll see all year. Chronicle....yeah it was that good.

(A Short) Movie Review: The Adventures of Tintin

This was the 'Indiana Jones' movie Spielberg wanted to do but instead did the one George Lucas f'ed up.


The annual 'Christmas Night Movie' was a small affair with just the wife and two of our friends. We saw Tintin and we all loved it. It was a 3D showing, and the 3D was ok but it absolutely doesn't need to be seen in 3D.

The visuals are just incredible. The world, the people within, everything just looks alive and vibrant. The musical score by John Williams is just a treat. The story was fun, it was paced well, the dialogue was spot on thanks to a screen play by Edgar Wright and Steven Moffat.

I can't complain about this movie, in fact I'm going to take my dad to see it cause I know he'll enjoy it alot.

And yes....this really was an Indiana Jones movie. There was many a moment that I was hearing the classic Indiana Jones music playing in my mind watching this. And that is a good thing. Good job to Steven Spielberg and Peter Jackson. Oh and please do collaborate on more movies in the future.

The 12 Days of Blogs-mas: Issue #6

I was using my Facey-page to ask (read: beg and plead for) new suggestions for posts today. I ended up with a lot of good ones too. From the biggest RPG rules set change faux pax/ improvements, most memorable player I've played with and their character, number of PC or Player deaths I've dealt or witnessed and describe them, to 'What doesn't The Dude abide?'.

All are valid. Only one though made me put my Eclipse Phase post on the back burner for another day. I don't think Charles will mind as he's currently one with the Force. So the question posed by my friend Jeremy (from the notorious P-Burg/Easton Crew) was the following:

"You're doing a big budget comic movie but have to cast only your friends. Who would you cast and why?"

Ironically.....I've already thought of this. I have no life. I admit it.

But what movie would I be casting?

                                                                   Justice League

Now for my lineup I will have core members as well as secondary heroes. For the villains I'd probably match up members of congress, wall street bankers, hipsters and emo kids. But I'm going to focus on the casting of the heroes of my Justice League movie.

Superman

The Man of Steel, the ultimate boy scout, truth, justice, blah blah blah would be played by one of my dearest friends, one of my groomsman and an ultimate boy scout in his own right (made Eagle Scout). Dr. Marino S is the embodiment of Superman. Marino is that kind and compassionate. He does the right things. His heart is truly matched to Kal-El's. And he probably owns blue tights too. But to me Marino is a shining example of virtue and valor. He's Superman.


Batman

A chunk of friends know who fills this roll. Heck he's practically there already. My friend Bill E. is not only a Batman fan...ah hell he thinks he is Batman. And I've seen him dressed as the Dark Knight for Halloween and he's more intimidating than any Batman to EVER grace the silver screen. Also Bill is a police officer and does real detective work. He solves crimes and puts the perps away. He also hasn't used a gun to do so as of now. Bill commands respect when he enters a room. His personality is as forceful as Batman's is. Fortunately this Batman doesn't have a Robin to follow him around.


Wonder Woman

My wife Jess. She's compassionate, loyal, fierce, headstrong, a warrior at heart. She just needs the boots and she's all set. Besides any woman who married me MUST be Wonder Woman to put up with my shit.
The amazon princess is my wife's favorite character in comics and showed her girls can kick serious ass. And she does. She teaches high school. She HAS to kick ass to survive that nightmarish hell scape of idiocy.


The Martian Manhunter

Why that is Eric from Gaming With The Gnomies naturally. If you've ever met this guy in real life you're fairly certain he is from Mars. He's also cerebral, tends to vanish and re-appear behind people, he's consumed so much lime jello in his life he is tinted green. He'd also be the guy you'd want directing the other heroes around from the watchtower. And there are also days, I swear this is true, he can read minds.
And the name 'Martian Manhunter' might reference a certain trip to Ohio as well.


The Flash

This is the Wally West Flash. So he's red-head, smart mouthed, likes making people laugh, mocks himself, and is willing give up everything he has to save his friends. I think I would fit this. I'm not being narcissistic here but its possible I could be considered the heart of the team (the conscious is Superman). And its my blog and I don't wanna be Darksied (again).


Doctor Fate

This was an interesting thought because I had to think out of my friends who would actually be the best at handling magical powers. I had to look for someone who was kind of a loner, intelligent and was able to pronounce intricate words of power. My friend Charles fits this bill. Years of college Latin classes got the language part down, he's kinda solitary except when playing Pathfinder and is intelligent. Doctor Fate always had an air of uncertainty about him due to his role and I think Charles could play that nicely too. Now this is only if 'Good Charles' is cast. 'Just got out of work Charles' becomes Parallax hell bent on destroying everything.


Plastic Man

Plastic Man is a goofy character. He's a very weird character. He thinks differently than other heroes because, well, his brain is made of plastic. And while he's funny it can also drive the other team members nuts with the insanity of being Plastic Man. My friend Brian J is Plastic Man. (And that doesn't mean his roomie is Hula-Hula...though I was considering it). Brian is weird, funny, has a plastic brain I believe. Brian can also be overpowering in his funny and can drive us nuts at times too. The puns...oh the BAD puns....they just don't stop. Yeah, he's Plas.


Lobo

Jeremy. Both don't quit. Both resemble a honey badger. Both kick ass. Both are pale in complexion. (Good thing I'm The Flash cause I'm probably going to be running now!) Really, you want this guy at your back.


The Question

He's an interesting case. Let's lose the conspiracy theory nut job part and look at his intellect. He sees things totally different than you or I. Similar to the TV character 'Monk'. He's obsessive/compulsive about the details and knowledge. My friend Adam S. is that. We call him 'The Infinite Pit of Useless Information' cause he is that brilliant. Adam would make Sheldon Cooper cry. I love him dearly and I can see him being the man that sees all the angles. He'd also look spiffy in a blue trench coat.


The Green Arrow

Politically and socially conscious and outspoken. A sharp wit and tongue to match. Slightly cocky. Can grow a sweet beard. Its Bob. I don't know about his archery skills and he's not a millionaire but Bob could easily be the Robin Hood for this movie. I see him standing up for the little guys, the every man and telling 'The Man' to go fark himself at a moments notice. Yeah its Bob.


WildCat

This WildCat is more of a street brawler than boxer. So who do I know that's a brawler/wrestler, hard headed and old? Larry! (Again....glad I'm The Flash) He's a scrapper. And god help you if he nails you with a head butt (right Bob?). Also Larry would probably own a catsuit and I'm not sure why nor do I want that answer.


Aquaman

I think Eric P. from the P-Burg/Easton Crew fits this bill. He's blond, kinda smells fishy and more than likely owns and orange shirt and green tights. I don't think he has telepathy with oceanic life but this Aquaman would be more like the 'dancing Aquaman' from the early days of Adult Swim. That I can see him doing.


Vigilante

To me this character, a cowboy hero, just screams Bruce from my Runelords PFRPG game. Both appear to be from another era all together. Its that older, wiser, cowboy hero vibe I see him pulling off. And if you know Bruce you kinda get the impression he's been born in the wrong time period. While I joke about his age and imply the cretaceous period was his home time, he'd probably be more at home in the 1930's or 1940's. He's got a different outlook on things that you just don't see these days. Much like a cowboy hero in the DC universe. And he'd look funny in the 10 gallon hat with bandanna mask too!



And there's my casting call. If you're name wasn't listed don't feel bad, you just were not right for the Justice League. I never cast for my version of The Avengers. Or you're a villain (you bastards).

The 12 Days of Blogs-mas: Episode III

I had a wonderful date day with the wife and I'm going to talk about the movie we went and saw this afternoon. And this movie was Tom Cruise free too!

It's elementary my dear reader!

I'm going to try my damn best to keep this as spoiler free as humanly possible here just because I'm writing a review for a film that *just* opened today. Ok, here we go....

Sherlock and Watson are on the case of Professor James Moriarty who is using his considerable intellect and resources for assorted nefarious deeds which are coalescing into a grand scale masterstroke. The game between Holmes and Moriarty take the viewer through the streets of London, Paris, into Germany and finally Switzerland where the showdown between the great minds finally goes down.

That's the spoiler free short of it. See? I kept it spoiler free. But did I like this movie?

YES!

I didn't just like this movie, I loved it. It took what I did like with the first movie (the characters and mystery aspects) and ramped it up. Downey Jr is just great as Holmes and I can't see anyone else playing Dr. Watson other than Jude Law. He was a wonderful foil for the insane genius that is Downey's Holmes. And in this movie, since they are already known to the audience, you see they are more than just partners they are brothers and treat each other as such more so than before.

Speaking of brothers......Stephen Fry as Mycroft Holmes is just perfect casting. He is just absurdly witty and sublimely sarcastic while also maintaining the Holmes family tradition of being oblivious to polite social practices. One scene in particular with Mycroft had me laughing so hard my side started to cramp up. It involves Mycroft and Watson's wife in his home. You'll know it when it happens.

Noomi Rapace as the gypsy Madam Simza was a nice addition to the Holmes crew of intrepid investigators. Rachel McAdams returns as Irene Adler from the first movie and I still like the character. I wish there was more of her in the movie.

Finally to round out the cast I need to talk about the Jared Harris as Professor James Moriarty. He is the most sinister....no....he is the most evil villain I've seen in YEARS. He plays Moriarty with a level of confidence and intelligence that you got from reading the original Doyle books. He's driven, ruthless, brutal, calculating. He's perfect. And how he and Downey play off each other in each of their meetings through out the movie is priceless and had me wanting more. I think this may be even an Oscar worthy performance. He's that good and he should be being the son of legendary Sir Richard Harris! He took this role and absolutely owned it.

The music was well done for the soundtrack and added lots of flavor to the feel of the look of the movie. Guy Ritchie's action scenes are still enjoyable to watch and are adrenaline pumping inducing affairs. The costumes looked great for the period. And even some of the more 'suspending disbelief' set pieces of the film didn't feel out of place.

The movie was a great ride full of thrills and laughs. Its not a hardcore detective story like some Holmes purists are craving but for a good time at the theater you can't beat it. I honestly prefer seeing a version of Holmes more akin to a Victorian age Batman than the stuffy pipe smoking frail detective. It makes a better movie experience overall. In fact I'd even go as far to say that the way Downey plays Holmes is a cross between Batman with the intelligence of Doctor Who. He's generally 10 steps further ahead of what comes out of his mouth and twenty steps ahead of the people he's trying to catch.

Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows is worth going to see and worth seeing even at full evening ticket price. It was just a fun film that made both my wife and I smile for the rest of the day.

*Oh and the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises was before it too. Damn thing gave me the chills...in a good way!*

Muhna-muhna....doo doo dee doo doo....muhna-muhna.....

Superb. Go see it. I laughed, I laughed more, I cried tears of joy, I laughed even more.


I got weirded out at how Miss Piggy and Kermit were dealing being around each other after their marriage fails. Actually that was a starkly adult revelation during the course of the movie and it was handled well but I found it jarring among all the light-heartedness that permeated everything else.


Yes its a musical. Yes its childish, whimsical and as corny as Fozzies *BEST* jokes. Its never as bad as Fozzie's worst jokes though. And the best part of all I took from the movie is that The Muppets still work and are relevant today.


I loved the cast of Jason Segel and Amy Adams (who is just too damn cute). I loved Chris Cooper as the villainous oil tycoon who was purchasing the old, unused Muppet theater because there was oil to drill under it. I also have to give credit to Jason Segel, who also wrote this film, because there was a very honest and caring reverence to the material presented in the film. Not just dialogue, but visual style, music selection, jokes & sight gags, amount of screen time the different muppets get, which muppets were present (damn near all of them BTW), the celebrity cameos.....it felt like this was a movie written by a true Muppet fan that from the start wanted to do something right. I wasn't let down and I'm still grinning like Gonzo when he doesn't have to pretend to Camilla anymore.


As for the music...you'll get classic Muppet music (Rainbow Connection got to me...I'll admit it) and new songs as well. Camilla and the chickens rendition of Cee-Lo's 'Fuck You' was hysterical. Its all done with clucks. Priceless. And I want this as my ring tone.


I also loved how the movie kept breaking the fourth wall through out to keep the audience tied right into the movie. Not as just a viewer but it felt like you were participating. And after the credits rolled I still wanted more.


More of Statler and Waldorff ripping on the movie, more of The Great Gonzo doing classic Gonzo stunts, more of Fozzie telling bad jokes with Jack Black, more of the honest moments like when Kermit was deciding if it was worth getting the gang back together to save the theater or not. More Animal.


I will own this movie when it comes out for purchase. I can't wait to see the new Muppet show in 2012 (I believe). Hell I just might go see it again just because I want this movie to succeed and I despise knowing Twilight is making money over more quality films. Most of all this movie took a franchise that was near and dear to my heart and didn't do it wrong (unlike Transformers, G.I.Joe, relaunch of Spider-Man, Superman,etc).


This movie made me happy. Go see it.

In a pseudo Halloween spirit this past Thursday evening the wifey, Matt and Brian all went to see 'Ghostbusters' in the theater for a special screening during the month of October. I'm happy we went.

When the movie came out in theaters back in the day I was just a little kid and my parents didn't take me to see it with them. Oh well. Over the years I've seen it on TV, VHS, DVD and BluRay. And finally I've got to see it on the big screen.

And what a treat it was. The print was cleaned up to be shown on a digital projector so it looked really crisp and clean. I did notice some parts where the matte paintings showed motion behind them but no big deal. Its freaking Ghostbusters in the theater!

I will admit that I tried my hardest not to throw quotes during the whole movie and the audience did the same for the most part. It was a almost packed theater, about 90% + full, and the talking and quoting were kept to a minimum. The laughter was on full force as we all laughed at the same jokes, puns, sight gags that we've all known for years like it was the first time seeing it.

I am hoping this becomes an October tradition and they show this every year for Halloween. And why not? We keep getting Rocky Horror every Halloween and Valentines Day so why not Ghostbusters for those that don't want to see Tim Curry in drag singing about being a 'sweet transvestite'.

And what I've heard and what I'm hoping for is this showing was a 'test' to see if the franchise can still attract an audience and is still relevant. Well it is. So get on with Ghostbusters 3 already. Cause I really want to get the gang back together.

Never NEVER allow anyone in your house named Jerry.

Mostly because they suck. Yet in the case of "Fright Night" its because Jerry is a vampire hell bent on devouring you, your family, friends & girlfriend.

"Fright Night" was the date night movie du jour for the wifey and I on friday. And we both liked it. We really really liked it. Cripes it stars Chekov and Doctor Who for gods sake; why wouldn't I like it? Oh and that Colin Farrel guy who has starred in a few other movies as the major baddie.

Now I thought the casting was great for this. From Charlie Brewster, his mom, girlfriend, friends at school, Jerry the Vampire and Peter Vincent. I swear once David Tennant shows up the movie gets 200 times cooler and more enjoyable.

 In fact for the first half of the flick it is trying to be a serious, tension filled, horror flick (and to be honest it was dragging its ass a bit during this) until Jerry does something so ridiculous to the Brewster house that the rest of the movie *HAS* to keep on par with that or lose the audience. But fortunately it keeps up with the ramped up sense of lunacy (and dare I say cartoony action/horror) and it keeps your butt glued to the seat for the rest of the flick and it comes on like a Veyron doing 250+ MPH.

Its maddening. And it all leads up to Charlie going shopping for supplies and he goes to raid Jerry's home to save his girlfriend. Oh and Peter Vincent comes along with him to help Charlie kick serious vampire ass.

  Speaking of Peter Vincent..... while David Tennant is playing the iconic role first played by Roddy McDowell he isn't aping Roddy nor is he playing The Doctor. Tennant has crafted his own version of Peter Vincent. A Chris Angel Mindfreak-ish charlatan. A tortured soul. And a total coward but does the right thing and helps Charlie even though he knows this is suicide. Tennant is just awesome. Put this man in more movies.....NOW. (Just not in leather pants again....I didn't need to see him rubbing his balls cause of the chaffing....and going on about it....).

  And finally Jerry. Colin Farrel is amazing as a vampire. It wasn't the Chris Sarandon smarmy, slimy, 80's ladies man from the original film. No, Farrel was a shark. A total alpha male predator. A great white in the suburbs of Las Vegas. He was brutal, chilling, and just evil. And you can see that he enjoyed the hell out of playing this. And I will say that if Farrel wasn't Jerry this movie wouldn't have been as fun.

So what the hell are you waiting for? Go see this. Now. Go. And you don't need to see it in 3D either. 2D was just fine for me and the movie still rocked.

"Fright Night" ........ a kick ass way to end the summer movie season. I recommend it.
